Fairy Tales

I was so honored that these two decided to get married when we are learning about Fairy Tales. You didn't know us K teachers had so much pull....did ya? :) I thought it was so incredibly perfect our world is currently centered around a prince and new princess. This week we have been rehearsing for the Fairy Tale Ball. Ask your child to sing you our Fairy Tale song...

Beaming

It's incredible that holding a chick makes their little face LIGHT up so bright!

Here a cheep...there a cheep

This is my favorite thing they chicks do! When they are sleeping or trying to keep warm, they interlock their bodies and use each other for pillows. It is by far the sweetest thing I've ever seen!

Yesterday we practiced drawing chicks and then we labeled their parts. As you can see, most of them drew "Runaway". He is the chick that tried to runaway from me when I took him out of the incubator. He has quickly become K1 favorite!

Grouchy!

After reading this fun book by Eric Carle we acted it out and wrote about things that make us GROUCHY! It was so funny to hear about how they are grouchy when their blankets fall off, when they have to clean their room, go to the grocery store, or when they get "grounded". I was going to post the pictures of they AMAZING writing but then I remembered we've been practicing writing our last name (yay!) but not good for privacy (boo!).



Peep..peep!

I am so glad these little guys and gals decided to make their debut! K1 Could not possibly be buzzing with any more excitement!! I moved our little brood from our class incubator to the hallway with the chicks that hatched from K4. We have a grand total of 26 chicks! We are in the process of moving the web cam to the hallway for a live feed of them all together. Could they be any cuter??!!??

Wondering Wednesday...

Today is the big day when we remove the chicks from their turner and patiently await their arrival.

3-D homework alert!!

Today your child came home with a tree map looking similar to this...minus the pictures. Take the weekend to help them find things in your house or outside that are these shapes. They will need to draw a few things under each heading. Have them tell you why it fits (ex. a cube has all squares, cylinders have two circles that are the same size, etc.). We will share on Monday!

This Rocks

This morning we compared and contrasted rocks! First, I did a "shared writing" where I had them help me think of ways two rocks were alike and different. Then, they were on their own to choose any two rocks to write about in their Science journals. I was amazed (once again) at their ability to see and think about things my adult mind would never notice!

Jump ropes?

Today was GORGEOUS!!! There was a jump rope left out on the playground and K1 did not hesitate to put it to good use! They were precious lining up and taking turns and counting for each other! We don't have jump ropes for the playground (just balls) so if you have one at home you would like to donate...we'll take it!! Or we could just barrow...

Ponytails with Purpose

This morning was our schools second annual "Pink Hearts Fund" ponytail drive. We had a whopping 44 ponytails donated to make wigs for children battling cancer. It is quite an overwhelming moment watching little girls (and moms) chopping it off. IF you or your child would like to donate 8 inches next year...let the growing begin!

Almost famous :) This little one heard about the ponytail drive last year at Kindergarten Round-Up and has been growing since May! 

Not only were these moms BRAVE they let their girls do the CUTTING! Such a wonderful example. 

Windy Wednesday

After reading this book by Eric Carle, we each created a cloud we wish he would have included in his story! Their creativity never ceases to amaze me. Tomorrow they will all get a chance to label their picture (there's just not enough hours in a day!) I told them one of my favorite road trip memories is when my sister and I would see who could find the cooler cloud. Hope you don't fly away today :)

Sunflowers, Pumpkins and Apple Trees

What do those three things have in common?? We watched three videos about them on our schools iTouches today! Afterwards we shared out what our partner learned (lots of listening skills involved there!) We also each created a Thinking Map of our choice to organize our new and old information learned on these topics.

Eggs are here!

They are here!!! Today we examined the egss (they are all different sizes and colors) and made our "Chick Hatching Calendar" to keep track of their arrival. Keep it at a safe place (refridgerator, next to bed, etc.) and have your Kindergartner mark off the days! As you can see they will be hatching over the weekend (Easter weekend to be exact) so I'll come up and if they are hatching I'll send an email for you all to come up to school.

On a side note-we started reading this chapter book last week. Ask your child to tell you what fun things we get to do during chapter book readings and see if they know what's going on in Junie's funny Kindergarten world. :)

The time has come...

Saturday we will be welcoming the arrival of chicken eggs! Today we discussed the life cycle of a chicken, the incubator condition and how we need to be extra quiet so they can grow. :) More updates to come...

Meanies

This week we are reading (one of my favorites) the story Meanies by Joy Cowley. We read one "shared reading" book per week. Shared reading books usually are predictable, have a rhyme or rhythm, and have large print suitable for large group readings. They help readers to develop positive concept of themselves as readers, develop book and print concepts, provide the reader with a model, and gives them security to read aloud. Ask your child:

• Where do Meanies wash?
• What do Meanies drive?
• What do meanies eat?
• Where do Meanies sleep?
• What do Meanies do?
• Who wants to be a Meanie?
