Flashlight reading for the WIN!

If you remember WAY back to curriculum night, I discussed how part of our literacy program is "shared reading" books. Well this weeks book is In a Dark, Dark Wood. Today we read the book all together using a flashlight (instead of my usual pointer) then THEY got to use a flashlight, too! They each took turns reading the book with their group and I couldn't believe how ENGAGED they were with their reading! 

Library Time

Each week we will take a visit to the Library to check out a new book and be treated to a lesson from Mrs. Bryant. Your child gets to choose a book of their choice/topic and they will be coming home soon! I recommend you to read it at home, return to school within a few days, and they can keep in their book box to read during "read to self".

How cute are these readers? They have been working diligently on building their reading stamina. As of today, K1 can read for 12 minutes! They began practicing reading for two minutes to show they could read the whole time, stay in one spot, don't sit by a friend, read quietly and treat the books kindly. If your wondering how your child is "reading" even though they're not yet reading...I'll clarify. There are three ways to read a book:

1. Read the pictures

2. Read the words

3. Retell a familiar story

They also look for "popcorn words" or other words they know. Each week they get to choose 6 new books (3 on their level and 3 free choice) along with their "Song and Poetry Journal" that contains all the songs we are learning. As for now, they keep their Library book in there, too.

We have already learned about "sh" and "th" and they keep asking "When are we going to learn CH?" I LOVE how they are so ready to LEARN! It's their lucky week!

More fun Fairy Tale origami in the library! This one was slightly more complicated than the wolf but they stuck with it :)
