Jan Brett

In case you haven't heard, K1 has been learning about the author and illustrator Jan Brett! We have been reading her beautiful books that are inspired by her travels to different countries. Her favorite animal to draw is a hedgehog, she also has a few as pets. Yesterday we watch a video of her drawing a hedgehog from her website and followed her step by step. Today they traced over their drawings with Sharpie and water colored. I'm usually a stickler for their drawings being "accurate" but today I let them choose what color(s) to paint. I've never seen more colorful animals in my LIFE!  :)

Our author study of Jan Brett is in full swing! Today we read The Hat and then made these little hedgies with hats! Did you know Jan Brett owns a hedgehog and she tries to put one in every one of her books?

For all of you native Texans out there, you are probably familiar with Bluebonnet Book Awards. The Texas Library Association ALSO has a list of picture books, too! Our FAB librarian has ordered them for our school library and I wasted no time at all introducing them to K1! We read this book, Perfect Square and then created our own "square idea". I gave them each a square and (the surprisingly) tricky part was that they had to use the WHOLE square. Here a cheep...there a cheep

This is my favorite thing they chicks do! When they are sleeping or trying to keep warm, they interlock their bodies and use each other for pillows. It is by far the sweetest thing I've ever seen!

Yesterday we practiced drawing chicks and then we labeled their parts. As you can see, most of them drew "Runaway". He is the chick that tried to runaway from me when I took him out of the incubator. He has quickly become K1 favorite!

President's Day 2011

Hope you are having a great President's Day! Today we have been reading and learning about presidents past and present. We created these Abraham Lincoln's last week but worked on our George Washington's this morning. Enjoy!

Get your smile on!

We had a very fun and informative visit from the Smileguard today! We leaned to brush 2 a day, floss once, and to have an adult help us brush! We also discussed healthy eating choices.

International Day of Peace

Today we participated in the Pinwheels for Peace Project where we displayed 500 handmade Pinwheels (made in Art class) on the school grounds for the the International Day of Peace. The project has been around since 2005 and this year they expect to have 3 million pinwheels spinning around the world to send a message of peace.
