As you all saw yesterday (in your child's folder) there was a bit of an abduction scare a little too close to home. These instances and "close calls" are unfortunate reminders of how important it is to inform and teach our children of STRANGER DANGER! Here are some tips from our school counselor as to what to do if a stranger approaches:
1. Step Back
2. Yell for help (“stranger danger”)
3. Run
4. If the student is walking, they can make a quick u-turn (cars can’t turn as quickly)
5. It’s not what the stranger looks like, it’s what they ask you to do (some strangers look OK)
6. Don’t be fooled by offers of candy, toys or pets
7. If they ask you to keep a secret, that is the very time to TELL
8. Trust your feelings – if something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t right
9. Tell a trusted adult immediately
Please go over these and have discusions often about what they should do. The thought of any thing bad happening to your child makes my stomach do flips, I also think I watch too much Dateline.

Character and Setting

SnOw much fun!
Today we stepped outside for a quick minute to enjoy the SNOW! There wasn't much left but it is such a rare event I thought we should take advantage! It was also the perfect day to read The Three Snow Bears by Jan Brett. Ask your child what story this book sounds like...hint-hint- she has gold hair.

Jan Brett
Today we started our Author and Illustrator study! I love to begin with Jan Brett because she has so many amazing books about winter! Today we read The Mitten and then thought about things we have lost, too. We created this chart of things we have lost and (sometimes) found. We discussed how we felt when we lost it or found it and how it made our parents feel. I also found out there are some lost items that you might not know about :)
Jan Brett is know for creating borders in her stories that show what is going to happen next. Ask your child which was the last animal inside the mitten!
